Freshwater sport fish fall into numerous categories, but we are going to focus on pan-fish and bass.
Pan-fish
This category includes bluegill, crappie, red eared sunfish, and many more. All of these fish are fun to catch and provide great table fair. They are considered easy to catch, and are usually a go to for the beginning angler. One of the main reasons they are considered easy to catch is because they tend to school up, are plentiful in most waters, and are easiest to find. It is best here to remember a little saying: catching fish is the easy part, finding fish is the hard part. Pan-fish, regardless of species, is the best bet for fish to keep to provide a tasty dinner.

Bass
When talking about bass, we are actually referring to a group of fish called black bass that are from the sunfish family (Centrarchidae). The most common and sought after of the black bass are the Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted Bass.
These fish are desirable due to their potential large size, aggressive nature, and the great fight they put up. Largemouth are spread all over the United States, and are probably the fish that comes to mind when thinking of bass. Smallmouths prefer cooler water and Spotted bass can be found in most waters, but is less common than the largemouth.
Bass are considered good table fare.
