Spincast Reels
The most basic reel is the spincast reel, which is also called a closed-face reel. These reels are known to be budget friendly as well as extremely easy to use. Some models sit on top of the rod and have a button on the back to facilitate casting. Other models sit under the rod and have a trigger to pull in order to cast.

Either model is easy and fun to use, especially for the beginning angler. There is no risk of backlash, and the reels usually come spooled with line. We are not saying they are trouble free, but it is minimal. Investing in one of these reels will let you get your hands on some equipment, and allow you to start practicing!
Spinning Reels
Not to be confused with spincast reels, these reels sit under the rod and use a bale to keep the line on the spool. The major advantage of these reels is that they are great for casting and you do not have to worry about backlash.
There is a bit of a learning curve to learn how to cast, but once mastered, these reels are extremely fun to use. Spinning reels come in many different sizes, from ultra light to heavy duty.

Bait Casting Reels
Reels in this category are more advanced, have the steepest learning curve, and nice ones can be quite pricey. This is the prototypical reel used during bass fishing.
With little to no experience, it will be hard to pick up a bait casting reel and use it immediately. Once you get the hang of using them though, they are fun and easy to use, so practice, practice, practice!
