Basic Fishing Equipment

Updated: Aug 31, 2020

The first thing you need without a doubt will be a fishing license. If you are harvesting your catch or releasing as you catch, you must have a license. States require them and they are inexpensive and easy to get. In fact, you can get one online in most instances. When you are getting your license, there will also be a list of rules and regulations; familiarize yourself with those and you are all set!

So, with legalities out of the way, let's get to the fun part! At a completely basic level (unless you are a survival specialist), you will need a rod and reel, fishing line, and some other tackle.

Rod and Reel

Let's focus on the reel first. There are three types: spin cast, spinning, and bait casting. You can find more in-depth information here. Keep in mind that you do not have to spend big money! You can get a nice combo that works great for a bargain.

To say that fishing rods come in all different sizes and configurations is the understatement of the year! Rods can vary in length from 5 feet long to 8 feet long and have power listed as light, medium, heavy. Rods also have action, which is quantified as fast, medium, or slow. All of this can be extremely confusing! When just starting out, for pan-fish, go with light power, and for bass, go with medium.

Fishing Line

Line for fishing comes in three main forms: monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braid. Each type has pros and cons, but we are keeping it simple at this point. Regardless of the target species, if you are just getting started, use 10 lb monofilament. If you know you are going for pan-fish only, drop down to 6 lb monofilament. We can get a bit more in-depth about fishing line here.

Not only is the fishing line important, but also how you tie your lure or tackle on is extremely important. We will focus on three knots to tie: Palomar, Improved Clinch Knot, and the Loop Knot.

The last thing to cover will be the tackle box and what to put in it. Let's go!
